What is The River?

The River is a church sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The church is named The River because faith is a journey. Everyone's journey is unique, so each person is encouraged to find a relationship with God and others that works for them.

Have you ever been whitewater rafting, float tubing, or done any other activity on a river? If you have, then you know that the goal was not to get from Point A to Point B. The goal was the journey. It was just to be on the journey. The journey was the goal. That is how we view faith: it is a journey, not a destination.

Also, if you have done one of those activities, you know that it is the river that takes you where you are going.Your job is to read the river, get in the right places, and let the river take you through the rapids and around the rocks. This is true of our relationship with God as well- God is in control, and our job is simply to see what God is doing in our lives and then get in the right place. God is the journey, and the destination.

What The River does

In addition to Sunday morning worship, there are groups called Clusters.Clusters connect people with common needs and interests in extended family kinds of relationships. Clusters provide a sense of belonging and community and people with whom you can share your journey in whatever way works for you.

When & where

Worship is Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at Mill Springs Academy in the first building on the left (directions here). Each Cluster has regular gatherings in homes or in service projects in the community, and there are also special events. See the Recent News page for more info.

Plans for the future

Here is The River's long range plan. These may seem far off, but past experience tells us this is a realistic timetable for growth.

  • 2009: purchase the property at Freemanville & Providence from our national church office. Click here for an aerial photo of the land.
  • 2011: start the process of building on the property
  • 2013: open the building
  • 2016: give birth to a new church
